Susan Gainen’s Cat Crimes Mugshots

Susan Gainen’s Cat Crimes Mugshots introduced here, repost from susangainenartist.com blog..

Cats look so peaceful when they sleep. Nonsense. They are plotting cat crime.

If you live with cats, you are a victim of cat crime. You wake up to find socks missing, valuable glass in pieces, stray outdoor animal and plant life on the stairs and in the middle of the living room. Depending on the quality of your laundry detergent, you may find cat hair on fresh sheets, and evidence of your white cat’s nap on your black t-shirts. Cat crime is everywhere and all the time.

Original in the Art Shoppe

The original is available at the Art Shoppe ($120 plus tax). Also, prints ($25 plus tax) and cards (5×7 plus envelopes, $4 each.)

Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian

It took several years to identify as a Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian — a mouthful, but true. She is lucky to live on a path and flyway frequented by creatures who stop by her living room studio, sit for portraits, tell their stories, and eat all of the snacks. Fortunately, Model and Muse Max-the-Cat is also the Snacks Manager.

After publishing the fourth creature book, it appeared that they and their art had taken over.

Abstract Paintings

Not so fast. Susan’s comfort zone is tiny shapes in tiny spaces, and abstract painting has been an element in much of her work — including the creatures. It resurfaced in earnest in 2015 with the Friendship: Complicated. Sometimes Messy. Beautiful if you’re lucky series, and the Neighborhoods paintings.

Paper Mosaic

Her artist pals’ reactions to the installation of The World Headquarters of the Flying Pigs in a WARM show at the Bethesda Gallery was instant, and surprising.

They asked, “Ceramic?” She replied, “No, paper.”

Cuts with scissors

When she turned 65, she abandoned all activity requiring either safety equipment or liability waivers including glass or tile cutting or bungee jumping. Clearly, people saw ceramic tile in these paper pigs. It was a short leap from pigs to tile.

Cats of the Art Shoppe #2

Some Art Shoppe artists have passing acquaintance with cats — others are fantastically inspired and ruled by them. Sometimes, it may be hard to tell the difference.

Pamela Kirton’s Cats

Once a fabric designer, Pamela Kirton has taken those fabric designs into the 21st century. She has a family of cats created with some of those designs using digital pieced patchwork. (Roosters and owls, too!). Catboy (the drawing) is watching you. Click here to learn more about her bird art.

Peter Elvidge’s Cats

Peter Elvidge is a pixel artist. What’s that? With extremely limited vision and up-to-the-minute-technology, he makes his art one pixel at a time. Some of his images have millions of pixels, and he is the Guiness World Record Holder for two images with the largest number of pixels (800,000 +) in record time.

Yes. One. Pixel. At. A. Time.

Susan Gainen’s Cats

Managed by Max-the-Cat, Susan Gainen paints Max and his friends. Some of them appear in New World of Cats: Max the Cat and His Friends (at Amazon and in autographed at The Art Shoppe). The Blue Cave Cat (below) is on the a panel that was part of the Lost Cave Paintings of Saint Paul installation at the 2013 WARM (Women’s Art Resources) Protege Show.
